Key West Travel My Way - Attractions, Accommodations and Tours in Key West, Florida

Everything you need to know about attractions in Key West, from a personal point of view.

Key West has some of the most offbeat tours and attractions of any tourist destination. Think chickens and ghosts! One of Key West's most popular tours is the evening ramble of Old Town Streets to visit haunted mansions and hear the ghoulish stories. Our colorful past includes _______ and a man who posed as a doctor to care for a girl who was dying of tuberculosis. He spirited away her body after her death and lived with his beloved for years.

Since Key West is built on water, our cemetary had to be built above ground. It's a popular stop on walking tours of Old Town.

The homes of Key West are one its top attraction. Called Conch houses (after our symbol, the Queen Conch - and conch is also what we call those born and bred here.) (image) ... these clapboard houses are graecful examples of Victorian architecture, and many are graced with gingerbread scrolling on balustrades and balconies. And here's an interesting bit of trivia, if you look at the ceiling of many balconies, they are painted a robin's egg blue. It is a trck to fool wasps into seeing the ceiling as part of the sky, so they will build their nests somewhere else.

Many of Key West's elegant mansions can be toured ... and are well worth the admission fee. Curry Mansion (address) is decorated with many beautifiul antique furnishings, and Southernmost Mansion at the southern end, natch, of Duval, is also worth a visit ... and not just for the tour. Southernmost has a lovely pool and beach area (a rarity in Key West, which, oddly enough, despite being an island, doesn't have a lot of beaches. You can also stay at both of these elegant, Victorian homes. I've stayed at the Curry Mansion and it was delightful. (See Key West Guesthouses for more information.)

Southernmost Point is at the corner of Whitehead and South Street. A large replica of a ocean buoy sits on the edge of the Atlatic. Technically, it's not the southernmost point in Key West ... that would be at White Street Pier, but the spot is popular with tourists and has a nice view of the water.

You can get a great overview of all Key West from the Conch Train or Key West Trolley. While the conch train tour covers a bit more of Key West, I recommend you stick with the trolley ... you can get off and on at many points between the start and end of the tour, allowing you to shop on Duval (one of the stops is next to Fast Buck Freddies - Key West's only department store - and first on favorites for shoppng in Key West), visit the Southernmost Point , have lunch at Mango's (link to restaurant page), and other delights along the way.
